But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” (John 2:5 NLT)
When God tells you to do something, drop everything you’re doing and do it. Do it with joy and thanksgiving that He wants to use you. Trust Him with the outcome.
Don't ask questions. Don't try to reason or negotiate.
Just. Do. It. Immediately.
During Jesus’ walk on earth God spoke audibly and directly to human beings two times, once at His baptism:
And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17 NKJV)
And then again at Jesus’ Transfiguration on the Mount:
“This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.” Matthew 17:5 NLT).
I think it’s something we need to take note of and respond to immediately.
Listen and obey. Listen to Jesus and obey Jesus. So, if we are commanded to listen to Him that means He is speaking. Both listening and obedience are key. You can’t walk in the fullness of God without doing both.
“The sheep that are My own hear and are listening to My voice; and I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27 AMPC)
As His sheep we can hear Him when we are listening for, and to, His voice. When He speaks, He is giving us information to act on – either for ourselves or for others. However, we can only hear Him when we expect to hear Him and are actively listening for, and to, His voice.
God is not asking us to listen, or suggesting that we listen, He is commanding us to listen. Since God is commanding us to listen to His Son then it’s something we need to take seriously.
Here's some Scriptures to meditate on when listening for God's voice:
"Incline your ear [submit and consent to the divine will] and come to Me; hear, and your soul will revive; and I will make an everlasting covenant or league with you, even the sure mercy (kindness, goodwill, and compassion) promised to David." (Isaiah 55:3 AMPC)
"But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, and will be [a]secure, without fear of evil.” (Proverbs 1:33 NKJV)
" O Lord, listen to my cry; give me the discerning mind you promised." (Psalm 119:169 NLT)
"If you stop listening to instruction, my child, you will turn your back on knowledge." (Proverbs 19:27 NLT)
"Listen, God! Please, pay attention! Can you make sense of these ramblings, my groans and cries? King-God, I need your help. Every morning you’ll hear me at it again. Every morning I lay out the pieces of my life on your altar and watch for fire to descend." (Psalm 5:1-3 MSG)
